Myriam Barros

I was born in Uruguay and immigrated to Northern Spain in the early 90`s. Since I was very young I had a relationship with the hospitality sector because my parents had a small restaurant. In 2000 I moved to Lanzarote where I am living ever since. Within these last nearly 20 years I managed to bring inline my work with bringing up children and being an activist. Having been a rebel since my childhood, I have participated in movements like the 15M, platforms against petroleum drilling, as well as in feministic movements. Since 2007 I am member of the labor union, combining my actual work as a chambermaid with my presidency of the Las Kellys Association. Since 2014 the Association Las Kellys has organized meetings with several political representatives, including a two hour meeting with the president of Spain at that time, Mariano Rajoy. We drafted laws which we presented to the Congress and which were taken into account by the Congress and the Spanish Senate. Last year we went to Brussels to demand from the European Union to obligate Spain to observe the law of prevention of working risks and protection of pregnant women. At the moment we are taking part in a research project which has been prepared by the Institute TIDES University Institute of Tourism & Sustainable Development –TIDES of the ULPGC- which tries to develop a workshop of collective learning to create new markets of regenerative and redistributive tourism by transforming gender violence, exploitation of labor and consumer  behavior.
